Political Turkeys

Ask anyone who grew up on a turkey farm, "Are politicians like turkeys or are turkeys like politicians?"

During my high school summers, I worked for a month on my uncle's turkey farm. My uncle taught me all the nuances of raising turkeys to satisfy all the purchases for the holidays' tables. It was a lot more work than I could have imagined. Think of thousands of these oversized chickens needing feeding, watering and cleaning up after them. Each day when I arrived on the tractor to feed or water, these big birds crowded around me pecking at me and gobbling loudly. Thousands of voices wanting to be heard.

At first, I was sure they were coordinating an attack. My uncle assured me they were harmless and their pecking beaks rarely penetrated my high rubber boot and thick farmer pants. "Just think of them as a bunch of angry politicians," he would suggest. Of course, I asked him to explain. He said turkeys are like politicians. They kackel a lot about nothing. They eat, s**t, and sleep accomplishing nothing. They get fat and sassier as they get longevity. They always cost more to raise than budgeted. They never want the gravy train to end and are always willing to eat more from the feeder. The only good results from these birds are when they dress the dining room table and fill everyone's tummy.

I was reminded of this story while watching the recent politicization of the Brett Kavanaugh Senate hearings for his candidacy to become a Supreme Court Justice. I was easily reminded of the Clarance Thomas' hearings for his Supreme Court Justice seat. We have not progressed as a civil society. More importantly, Senate Committee Democrats have not only trashed the process of confirmation, but they have also attempted to publically impugn the excellent reputation of a man and his family. Demonization and unsubstantiated character assassination are not the purposes of these hearings. No one is perfect. If this continues, no one will want to be a candidate for the judgeship if faced with this abusive, non-legal scrutiny.

Just as I tired of the routine of those turkeys on the farm, I am sure the majority of Americans are tired of these "turkey" delaying tactics used by these "turkey" Democrats and those invisible, non-elected individual "turkeys" who fund and support them.
